Miniature Red Dot Sights (MRDS) have transformed defensive pistol shooting in ways that weren’t anticipated by the mainstream training community even ten years ago. The argument against pistol red dots — that they’re slow to acquire, fragile, and require too much training investment — has been systematically disproven by a generation of practitioners who ran them in training and on duty. The evidence now points the other way: shooters who train with a red dot achieve faster first-shot times, maintain accuracy at distance better, and correct grip and trigger errors more quickly because the dot is brutally honest about what you’re doing wrong.
Understanding Glock’s MOS System
Glock’s Modular Optic System (MOS) offers interchangeable mounting plates that allow one slide to accept different optic footprints by swapping a small adapter plate. This is a significant advantage for shooters who haven’t settled on a footprint preference or who want the flexibility to change optics in the future. The MOS system is available on most full-size and compact Glock models and is the cleanest path to a red dot without machining your slide.
The criticism of MOS is that the optic sits higher than a custom-milled cut and uses a mounting system that some shooters find less rigid than a direct mill. The adapter plate creates a small amount of flex under high round counts that doesn’t exist in a slide cut machined to the specific optic’s footprint. For most defensive use, this is theoretical rather than practical — MOS-mounted optics have been carried and used extensively without issues. If you’re running a training gun with thousands of rounds annually, a custom mill is worth considering. For a carry gun with moderate round count, MOS is entirely adequate.
Slide Milling: The Premium Path
Having a gunsmith mill a custom optic cut directly into your slide removes the adapter plate entirely and allows the optic to sit lower in the slide — bringing the dot closer to bore axis. This has two effects: reduced co-witness height requirement and a more stable platform for the optic. Companies like Trijicon, Holosun, and Shield have published their footprint specifications, and gunsmithing shops that specialize in slide work cut to these specs with CNC precision.
The downside is commitment. Once your slide is milled for a specific footprint, you’re locked to that footprint or footprints dimensionally compatible with the cut. Changing to a different optic family requires a new slide or adapting with a plate — which defeats the purpose. If you’re planning to run a single optic platform long-term, milling makes sense. If you’re still evaluating options, MOS is the smarter starting point.
Which Optic?
Two optics dominate serious defensive carry use:
