The Glock Ownership Quick-Reference

Which model, fast

  • Don’t know yet: start with the Glock 19 — the best all-around choice for most people carrying concealed
  • Concealment is the priority: the 43/43X/48 slim-line lineup
  • Home defense or range use: the Glock 17 — extra capacity and sight radius matter more than concealment there

Budget checkpoints

  • Bare minimum, carry-ready: pistol + quality kydex holster + 2 spare magazines + 500 rounds of practice ammo — roughly $850–1,050
  • What to add before you actually carry it: a defensive pistol fundamentals class + a weapon light if home defense is also a role — roughly $1,150–1,550 total
  • Fully dialed in: add a connector swap ($15–20) and quality sights or a red dot with co-witnessed irons — roughly $1,400–2,200 total

The one upgrade worth doing first

The OEM or Ghost 3.5 lb connector swap. $15–20, five minutes, no tools. Stop there for a carry gun — the trigger change will be perceptible, and the training you buy with the rest of the budget will matter more than any further hardware.

What NOT to do to a carry gun

  • Don’t reduce pull weight below 4 lbs
  • Don’t polish the striker
  • Don’t install anything that compromises the three passive safeties
  • Remember: a modified carry trigger is a real legal-exposure question if the gun is ever involved in a defensive shooting — not just a mechanical safety question

Maintenance minimums

  • Clean after every range session
  • Minimum monthly cleaning for a carry gun even if unfired — holster wear accumulates lint and debris
  • Know the 5 most common malfunction types and practice clearing them dry before you ever need to live
