Home Safe Buying Guide: What to Look For and What to Skip

Most people buy a safe wrong. They pick the cheapest one that fits their space, assume the lock means it is secure, and move on. Then they read about burglars walking out with an entire safe under their arm, or prying one open with tools from a hardware store in under five minutes, and realize what they actually purchased was a false sense of security.

Buying a safe well requires understanding what you are actually protecting against, because different threats require different specifications.

What You Are Actually Defending Against

Before looking at any product, define the threat. Most residential safes are designed for one or more of the following:

Fire protection. Documents, hard drives, and cash can be destroyed in a house fire even if the safe is not physically compromised. Fire-rated safes protect against heat and flame for a specified duration — typically 30, 60, or 120 minutes at 1200°F. The interior rating matters: paper chars at 451°F, digital media at roughly 125°F. A safe rated for document protection may destroy your USB drives.

Opportunistic burglary. The most common residential threat. A burglar with 5-10 minutes and basic tools. They are looking for easy wins — jewelry, cash, firearms — and will not spend significant time on a well-secured safe. Weight, anchor points, and pry resistance matter here. A 50-pound safe bolted to the floor is dramatically harder to defeat than an identical unbolted safe.

Determined burglary. A burglar who knows what you have, has time, and has tools. Defeating this threat requires a significantly higher safe specification — and honestly, for most residential situations, this threat level justifies a discussion with a security professional rather than a retail purchase.

Legal compliance. If you own firearms and have children or other unauthorized persons in the home, secure storage is a legal requirement in many jurisdictions and a basic responsibility in all of them. The compliance standard is lower than the security standard — a locked container that impedes unauthorized access satisfies most statutes, even if it would not stop a determined adult with tools.

Ratings That Actually Mean Something

UL Residential Security Container (RSC) Rating. UL tests safes against a simulated attack using common tools for a specified duration. RSC I means 5 minutes of tool resistance. RSC II means 10 minutes with more aggressive tools. These seem short, but remember the context: an opportunistic burglar is not running a clock. Five minutes of obvious, noisy, tool-requiring work in a residential home is a significant barrier. Most unrated safes fail in under 60 seconds.

Fire ratings. Look for UL 72 Class 350 (for paper) or Class 125 (for digital media). The duration — 30, 60, 120 minutes — indicates how long the interior remains below the rated temperature at 1200°F exterior. Longer is obviously better. Important caveat: most residential fires burn for 20-30 minutes in any given area. A 60-minute rating is adequate for most scenarios.

California Department of Justice (CA DOJ) approval. Required for handgun storage in California but functions as a useful minimum standard nationally. Tests basic pry and impact resistance.

What to Skip

Thin-wall “fire safes” under $100. The category is dominated by products with 14-16 gauge steel walls and no meaningful burglar resistance. The fire rating is often real (they are essentially insulated boxes), but they can be opened with a screwdriver and a few minutes. Fine for documents you are protecting from fire. Not adequate for anything valuable.

“Hidden” safes. The fake book, the wall clock with a compartment, the hollowed-out furniture. These are concealment devices, not safes. They provide no meaningful physical resistance. The security entirely depends on no one finding them — and experienced burglars search common concealment locations routinely.

Electronic locks with cheap mechanisms. The locking mechanism matters as much as the steel thickness. A solid safe with a poorly made electronic lock is vulnerable to manipulation. Look for safes with SecuRam, S&G (Sargent & Greenleaf), or La Gard lock components. These are the lock manufacturers that serious safe brands use.

Biometric-only locks on budget safes. Biometric convenience is nice. Biometric as the only access method on a $150 safe is a problem — the readers on budget models have failure rates that will frustrate you at the worst moments. Any safe with biometric access should also have a backup key or code.

What to Buy

For firearms and moderate valuables, the RSC I category from established brands is the right starting point. Liberty, Fort Knox, Browning, and American Security (AMSEC) are the recognized names with genuine build quality. Stack-On and Honeywell make acceptable entry-level products for the compliance-focused use case.

For a gun safe specifically: minimum 10-gauge steel, RSC I or better, pre-drilled anchor points (use them), and a lock from a recognized manufacturer. Budget $300-600 for a quality single-unit. Anything significantly cheaper is a storage cabinet with a lock, not a safe.

For documents and drives: a UL 72 Class 125 fire safe combined with a separate security safe for valuables. The dual-safe approach is cheaper than a single unit that does both well.

For a combination approach: AMSEC, Liberty, and Fort Knox all make products that carry both a fire rating and an RSC security rating. These are serious units in the $500-1500 range. For homeowners with significant firearms collections or high-value items, this is the right tier.

Anchoring

A safe that is not anchored is a portable safe. For anything under 500 lbs, anchor it. Pre-drilled bolt holes go through the floor to floor joists or a concrete substrate. Lag bolts into floor joists are adequate for most residential safes. Into concrete with expansion anchors is better. The hardware comes with quality safes; use it.
