Co-Witnessing: Setting Up Backup Sights for Red Dot Reliability

Running a red dot optic on your carry Glock commits you to a dependency on electronics. That’s not inherently a problem — properly selected and maintained red dots are extremely reliable — but a serious defensive setup doesn’t rely on any single point of failure when the cost of failure is unacceptable. Suppressor-height iron sights provide the backup that lets you carry a red dot without concern about what happens if the dot goes dark at the worst possible moment.

Why Electronics Fail and Why It Matters

Red dot batteries die. It happens at inopportune moments because batteries don’t send calendar reminders. Extreme cold degrades battery performance — a carry gun in a winter environment can see battery life decrease significantly. Exposure to water, mud, or impacts can compromise an optic’s function even in otherwise quality units. None of this is an argument against red dots — it’s an argument for having a mechanical backup that requires no power source and no electronics.

The good news is that suppressor-height sights paired with a red dot provide the backup at no meaningful cost to primary operation. When the dot is working — which is essentially always — the lower 1/3 co-witness arrangement puts the sights at the bottom of the window where they’re visible but not intrusive. The dot dominates your view and you use it normally. If the dot goes dark, you tilt slightly, find the sights in the lower portion of the window, and continue. The transition takes less than a second for a trained shooter who has practiced it.

Suppressor Height Sights: What They Are

Standard Glock sights sit at factory height — low enough to work without an optic, too low to be visible when an optic is mounted. Suppressor-height sights are taller, originally designed for use with suppressed pistols where the suppressor body blocks standard sights. This extra height is what raises them into the field of view of a mounted optic, enabling co-witness. They’re called suppressor height regardless of whether you’re running a suppressor.

Ameriglo’s GL-249 suppressor height sight set is the standard recommendation for Glock red dot setups. They’re available in tritium illumination, which means the co-witness is functional in low light — you’re not giving up anything in darkness by using backup sights instead of the red dot. The height is calibrated for lower 1/3 co-witness with most common pistol red dots including the RMR and Holosun series. Installation follows the same process as any iron sight installation — front sight hex tool, sight pusher for the rear dovetail.

Thread Locking Your Optic

While the subject is optic mounting, this is worth addressing: always use a thread locking compound on your red dot mounting screws. Centerfire pistol slides generate enough vibration during cycling to back out screws over time. A loose optic shifts zero and can eventually detach entirely. Vibra-Tite VC-3 is the preferred compound for optic mounting — it’s a non-hardening, removable thread locker that prevents screws from vibrating loose while still allowing removal with hand tools when you need to service the mount. Loctite 243 (blue) is also appropriate. Do not use red Loctite — it requires heat to remove and can damage the slide’s finish and the optic’s housing.

Torque your mounting screws to specification, apply the thread locker to the threads (not the head), and allow it to cure for 24 hours before carrying. This is a five-minute task that prevents a significant point of failure.
