Why Caliber Is the Least Interesting Decision Here
The caliber wars (9mm vs. .40 vs. .45) are mostly settled at this point among people who actually study terminal ballistics, and the short version is that modern premium defensive 9mm loads perform close enough to the larger calibers that the practical advantages of 9mm — more rounds per magazine, less recoil, faster follow-up shots, cheaper practice ammo — make it the better default choice for the overwhelming majority of carriers. This isn’t a controversial take anymore; it’s closer to consensus among trainers and ballisticians. If you already carry .40 or .45 and shoot it well, the data doesn’t say switch. It says caliber matters less than what you load into it and how much you’ve actually practiced with that exact load.
What Actually Matters: Bullet Design, Not the Number on the Box
The real decision is expansion and penetration, and the two are in tension. FBI protocol testing (12–18 inches of penetration in ballistic gel, through common intermediate barriers like heavy clothing, drywall, and auto glass) exists because a round that expands beautifully in bare gel can fail to expand at all after punching through a leather jacket, and a round that penetrates reliably through barriers can overpenetrate a target with no barrier in the way. Premium defensive hollow points from major manufacturers (Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, Hornady Critical Duty/Defense) are specifically engineered and tested against this protocol — that testing, not marketing copy, is what you’re actually paying for over a box of cheap hollow points that may or may not expand consistently.
What to actually check before buying a defensive load:
- Has it been independently tested against FBI protocol, and does it pass? Manufacturers and independent testers (Lucky Gunner Labs is the most cited public source) publish gel-test results by exact load, not just by bullet name — the +P and standard-pressure versions of the same round can perform meaningfully differently.
- Does your specific gun run it reliably? Hollow-point profiles feed differently than round-nose practice ammo, and a gun that’s never had a single malfunction with ball ammo can choke on a specific defensive load’s ogive shape. This is the single most common way people discover a problem at the worst possible time.
- Is it the same load you actually practice with, at least some of the time? Recoil impulse and point of impact both shift between practice ammo and premium defensive loads — not enormously, but enough to matter under stress if the only rounds you’ve ever fired through the gun are 115-grain range ammo.
The Reliability Test Most People Skip
Before a defensive load goes in a daily-carry gun, it should feed, fire, and eject cleanly through a minimum of 100–200 rounds in that specific gun — not a friend’s gun of the same model, not a different generation of the same platform. Magazine-specific testing matters too; if you rotate carry magazines, test the load through each one you’d actually load. This is the step that catches a genuine mismatch between a bullet’s profile and your gun’s feed ramp before it matters, rather than after.
What I Actually Run, and Why
I carry a well-established premium 9mm hollow point that’s passed independent FBI-protocol gel testing and has years of both lab data and real-world use behind it — I’m intentionally not naming the exact load here, because “what Lance carries” isn’t a substitute for testing your own gun with your own choice, and I don’t want anyone skipping their own reliability testing because a website told them what to buy. What I will say specifically: I run the same defensive load in every carry magazine, tested through 150 rounds with zero malfunctions before it went into daily rotation, and I shoot at least one box of that exact load through the gun every few months rather than assuming a single initial test holds forever as the gun accumulates wear and I swap components.
What I got wrong the first time: I bought a well-reviewed defensive load based entirely on published gel-test numbers, without running it through my actual gun first. It fed fine for the first 40 rounds and then started failing to fully chamber on the 41st, intermittently, for the rest of the box — a magazine lip and bullet-profile interaction that never showed up in anyone else’s testing because it was specific to that magazine, not the ammo or the gun in isolation. If I’d trusted the published numbers and skipped my own reliability test, that would have been the round in the gun on the one day it mattered. The fix wasn’t a different load, it was a different magazine from a different production batch — which is its own lesson: the failure wasn’t even really about the ammo.
Common Mistakes
Buying based on ballistic gel numbers alone. Passing FBI protocol in a lab is necessary, not sufficient — your specific gun still has to run it.
Never actually testing the carry load in the carry gun. A box sitting in the safe that’s never been fired through the gun it’s loaded in is an assumption, not a tested setup.
Chasing the “best” round instead of a well-tested one you can actually replicate. Ammo lots vary. Buy in enough quantity to test and carry the same lot where practical, and re-test if you have to switch lots.
