Lock Picking Basics: Understanding Physical Security from the Other Side

Lock picking is one of those skills that sounds specialized until you understand how locks actually work — at which point it becomes clear that the “security” most residential locks provide is largely theater against anyone who has spent a few hours with a pick set and a practice lock.

Understanding how locks fail is the most direct path to understanding what actually provides physical security. This is not a guide to picking locks you don’t own. It’s an honest examination of residential lock security and what a realistic security assessment looks like.

How Pin Tumbler Locks Work

The overwhelming majority of residential locks — and most commercial ones below high-security grade — use a pin tumbler mechanism. Understanding it takes about two minutes and completely demystifies both why picking works and what makes locks more resistant.

The lock cylinder (plug) sits inside a housing. Drilling through the lock vertically are pairs of spring-loaded pins: driver pins (above) and key pins (below). When no key is inserted, the driver pins cross the shear line — the boundary between plug and housing — keeping the plug from rotating.

The correct key has cuts at precisely the heights needed to push each key pin up exactly to the shear line, moving all driver pins into the housing. With no pins crossing the shear line, the plug rotates freely and the lock opens.

Picking exploits manufacturing tolerances. In a perfect lock, all pins would bind simultaneously when tension is applied to the plug, making picking impossible. In real locks, manufacturing variance means one pin binds before the others when slight rotational tension is applied. Setting that pin — pushing it to the shear line — transfers the bind to the next pin. Repeat for each pin. When all pins are set, the plug rotates.

This is single pin picking (SPP). Raking applies rapid back-and-forth motion with an irregular pick profile to set multiple pins simultaneously through luck and speed.

What This Means for Security

Most residential deadbolts can be picked in under 60 seconds by a trained person. This is not hyperbole — it’s the reliable finding of anyone who has spent meaningful time with picks and practice locks. The Kwikset SmartKey, Schlage B60N, and most standard residential deadbolts offer essentially no resistance to a picker with basic competency.

This is almost never how residential burglaries happen. The Bureau of Justice Statistics and most law enforcement data consistently show that the majority of residential break-ins use forced entry — kicking the door in, breaking a window, using a pry bar. Lock picking is time-consuming, visible, and requires skill. Brute force is fast, obvious, and requires nothing but willingness.

The physical security implications: the weakest link in most residential door security is not the lock itself but the door frame, strike plate, and the screws holding them. A deadbolt secured with standard 3/4-inch screws into soft wood framing will fail in one or two kicks regardless of lock quality. High-security locks that resist picking provide limited value if the door frame fails at 200 lbs of force.

High-Security Locks: What Actually Resists Picking

Several lock designs provide genuine resistance to picking:

Medeco. Medeco locks use angled key pins that must be rotated as well as elevated to the shear line, combined with a sidebar mechanism that requires the key pins to be in the correct rotational position. Defeating both mechanisms simultaneously is significantly harder than standard single-pin picking. Medeco is the most commonly specified high-security lock for commercial and residential applications.

Abloy Protec2. Finnish-designed disc detainer lock with no springs — a completely different mechanism from pin tumbler. Picking requires specialized tools not found in standard pick sets and substantial specific skill. Considered one of the most pick-resistant consumer-grade locks available.

Mul-T-Lock MT5+. Israeli-designed interactive element lock with a telescoping pin system that adds a secondary locking element. Widely used in high-security applications; pick resistance is genuine and documented.

ASSA Abloy CLIQ. Electronic key system combined with a mechanical high-security cylinder. The electronic element allows key control and audit logging; the mechanical cylinder provides resistance to picking and bumping. Used in institutional and commercial applications.

These locks cost $150–400 vs. $20–50 for standard residential locks. They make sense when key control matters (managing who has keys, preventing unauthorized key duplication) or when the physical security threat model justifies the cost.

Door Frame and Strike Plate: The More Important Fix

Before spending money on a high-security lock, secure the door frame:

Replace standard strike plates. Standard residential strike plates attach with 3/4-inch screws into the door jamb — which is attached to the frame with finishing nails. One solid kick concentrates force on a few small screws into soft wood. A heavy-duty strike plate (Strikemaster II, Don-jo, or similar) with 3-inch screws that reach the structural framing requires dramatically more force to defeat.

Door reinforcement. Door Armor or StrikeMaster II kits wrap the latch and hinge areas of the door frame with steel backing. The door may still get kicked in, but it takes far more force and more kicks — significantly more than most opportunistic break-in attempts will absorb.

Hinge side security. The hinge side of a door can be vulnerable if hinges are exposed (outswing doors). Hinge bolts or security studs prevent the door from being lifted off its hinges even if the hinge pins are accessible.

Learning to Pick: The Legitimate Path

Lock picking is a legitimate skill with a robust hobbyist community. TOOOL (The Open Organisation Of Lockpickers) and the r/lockpicking community are both excellent resources. The Locksport International Code of Ethics is a good framework: only pick locks you own or have explicit permission to pick.

A starter set from Sparrows or Peterson ($30–80) and a transparent practice lock ($15–25) lets you learn the basics quickly. Most people can open a standard residential deadbolt within a few hours of deliberate practice. Understanding this firsthand changes how you think about your own physical security.

What Picking My Own Front Door Taught Me

I picked the deadbolt on my own front door the week I got my first practice set, mostly out of curiosity about how my actual home security stacked up. It took me about four minutes, which felt slow at the time and which I now know is slow — a bit of practice gets that down to under a minute on most standard pin tumbler locks. What stuck with me wasn’t the time, it was how little the lock itself had to do with whether my house was actually secure.

The bigger surprise came from checking my own strike plate afterward. Standard builder-grade screws, maybe half an inch actually biting into anything structural. I replaced it with a longer-screw kit the same weekend, for about $15, and that fix mattered more for actual security than any lock upgrade would have at ten times the price. The deadbolt looked secure. The three screws holding its strike plate to softwood framing were the real vulnerability, and I’d walked past them for years without a second look.

The thing I underestimated before trying this myself: raking is much less satisfying to learn than single pin picking, but it’s also the technique that matters most for understanding real-world risk, because it’s what an opportunistic attacker with basic tools and no real skill would actually use. SPP is the more impressive party trick. Raking is the more honest threat model.
