Extended Controls: Maximizing Ergonomics Without Accidental Drops

Glock pistols are famous for their slick, minimalist profiles. The flush factory slide stop and magazine release keep the gun snag-free and trim — qualities that matter enormously for concealed carry. But for many shooters, particularly those with larger hands or who’ve trained extensively with other platforms, the flush controls require an uncomfortable grip shift to operate reliably. Extended controls can fix this, but the wrong choices can create serious problems on a carry gun that training-only shooters never encounter.

Extended Slide Stops: The Right Kind of Extended

The factory Glock slide stop lever is small by design — it’s meant to be pushed down to release the slide after a reload, not swept by the thumb like a 1911’s. Many new Glock shooters fight this and develop habits that work against them: either pushing the slide stop down awkwardly or slingshoting the slide for every reload, adding unnecessary time and complexity.

An extended slide stop addresses this by providing a larger, more accessible lever that can be manipulated reliably without breaking your master grip. The Vickers Tactical Extended Slide Stop is the gold standard here. Larry Vickers worked with TangoDown specifically to produce an extended lever that’s large enough to activate cleanly but not so large that it causes inadvertent lock-back during a firing grip. The paddle is contoured, not winged — meaning your thumb won’t accidentally ride it into a slide lock mid-string if you shoot with a high thumb position.

This distinction matters. Some shooters with a competition grip style experience nuisance slide locks when using aggressive extended levers because the thumb contacts the lever during recoil. Magazine Releases: Subtle Over Aggressive

The factory Glock magazine release is adequate but small. An extended release reduces the grip shift required to hit the button and speeds up reloads under pressure. Avoid the temptation of maximum-extension competition releases for a carry gun. A button that extends significantly beyond the frame profile will eventually actuate against something — a car seat, a counter edge, a door frame — and you’ll discover your magazine is gone at the worst possible time. If you want speed, practice the reload drill. The right extension is the smallest one that lets your thumb reach the button cleanly without shifting your grip.

Installation Considerations

Both the slide stop and magazine release are drop-in parts on Glock pistols — no gunsmithing required. The slide stop requires field-stripping the pistol and removing the locking block pin. The magazine release swaps out after depressing the button and rotating. Both operations can be accomplished with the Glock armorer’s tool or a standard punch and nylon hammer. If you’re not comfortable with the process, any competent gunsmith can install both parts in under fifteen minutes for a nominal fee.

After installation, function-test with empty magazines and dry-fire practice before going to the range. Verify that magazines drop freely, seat fully, and lock in place. Check that the slide stop releases cleanly under load. Then run a full range session before declaring the setup complete — parts occasionally need a break-in period or minor adjustment.
