An everyday carry knife is a tool first. Most people who buy an EDC knife spend their time cutting boxes, opening packages, breaking down cardboard, cutting food, and handling the dozens of small cutting tasks that come up in daily life. Defensive use is a legitimate secondary consideration but rarely the primary one. The knife that works best for carry is the one that handles both roles without compromising either.
This guide covers what actually matters in knife selection, separated from the marketing noise that dominates most knife content.
Blade Steel: The Foundation
Blade steel determines edge retention, corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and toughness. The relationships between these properties involve real tradeoffs — steels that hold an edge longer are typically harder to sharpen; steels with excellent corrosion resistance sometimes sacrifice toughness.
For EDC purposes, the practical tiers:
Entry-level production steel (8Cr13MoV, AUS-8, 420HC): Found on budget knives under $50. Adequate for light use, easy to sharpen, but loses its edge quickly under regular work. If you are just starting out or testing whether you will actually carry a knife, this tier is fine.
Mid-tier production steel (S30V, 154CM, D2, CPM-M4): The sweet spot for most EDC use. S30V and 154CM offer good corrosion resistance, reasonable edge retention, and sharpening that is achievable without specialized equipment. D2 has excellent wear resistance but is more prone to corrosion (not stainless). CPM-M4 is tough and holds an edge well. Most quality production knives in the $80-200 range use steels in this tier.
Premium steel (S35VN, S90V, M390, 20CV, Magnacut): Measurably better edge retention, better corrosion resistance, and refined toughness over the mid-tier options. The difference is real and meaningful for heavy users. For occasional EDC, the extra cost over mid-tier is hard to justify on performance grounds alone. MagnaCut is the current consensus choice for balancing all three properties at this tier.
Blade Geometry
Blade length: For EDC, 3 to 3.5 inches covers most tasks and is legal in most jurisdictions. Longer blades are better for specific cutting tasks but increasingly restricted by state and local law. Know your local knife laws before selecting blade length.
Blade shape:
- Drop point: The most versatile shape for general EDC — strong point, good belly for slicing, works for both cutting tasks and any defensive application. The default recommendation.
- Clip point: A swept back spine creates a fine point at the cost of some tip strength. Good for detail work and food prep; slightly more delicate tip than a drop point.
- Tanto: A reinforced point geometry sacrifices belly (slicing ability) for point strength. Optimized for piercing. Useful for specific defensive applications but reduces everyday utility.
- Sheepsfoot: A flat edge with a rounded, declawed tip. Excellent for utility work, poor for anything requiring a point. Found on some rescue and maritime knives.
Grind:
- Flat grind: The most versatile and common for EDC. Excellent slicer.
- Hollow grind: Aggressive slicing, thinner behind the edge, but less durable. Common on high-end customs and some production knives.
- Convex grind: Extremely durable edge geometry. Harder to sharpen without specialized stones.
Locking Mechanisms
The lock is the safety critical component of a folding knife. For EDC:
Liner lock: The most common mechanism on modern folding knives. A spring steel liner snaps behind the blade tang when open, preventing closure. Reliable when machined to spec; the weak point is the liner itself can be displaced by impact. One-handed release with the dominant hand’s thumb.
Frame lock: Same mechanism as liner lock but uses the frame itself rather than a separate liner. Stronger by design. Common on titanium-handled knives. One-handed.
Axis lock (Benchmade): A spring-loaded bar captures a groove in the blade tang. The design is genuinely stronger than liner or frame locks and is fully ambidextrous. Benchmade’s patents mean this mechanism is Benchmade-specific.
Ball bearing lock (IKBS/similar): Uses ball bearings instead of a traditional detent. Smooth action, reliable. Found on many mid-tier and custom knives.
Back lock (lockback): A traditional, strong lock type. The weak point is that closing requires two hands — the user must disengage the lock with the support hand while folding. Less convenient than front-of-blade locks for single-handed operation.
Handle Material
G10: Textured fiberglass composite. Excellent grip in wet conditions, extremely durable, does not absorb moisture. The standard material for working and defensive knives.
Carbon fiber: Lighter than G10, premium aesthetic, similar durability. More expensive. The weight savings are real but marginal for most users.
Micarta: Linen or canvas fibers in a phenolic resin matrix. Extremely tough, develops character with use, slightly more comfortable than G10 for extended use. Traditional working knife material.
Titanium: Light, non-corrosive, premium. Used for frame handles. Soft enough to machine precisely, hard enough for carry. More expensive than G10 or Micarta for the same performance.
Aluminum: Common on budget and mid-tier knives. Durable, light, but can become slippery when wet unless aggressively textured.
Deployment
For EDC, one-handed deployment is the practical standard. Options:
Thumb stud: The most common. Protrudes from both sides of the blade, allowing thumb-deployed opening. Works with either hand.
Thumb hole (Spyderco-style): A round hole in the blade. Reliable, catches on less material than a stud.
Flipper: A protrusion at the base of the blade that extends below the handle when closed. Pressure on the flipper opens the blade. Fast and reliable. The most common deployment method on modern production knives.
Assisted opening: A spring assists the blade after the initial travel begins. Legal in most jurisdictions that allow folding knives. Faster than manual but not recommended for defensive-specific carry — adds complexity without meaningful speed advantage for trained users.
What to Avoid
Ultra-cheap “tactical” knives. Knives marketed heavily on tactical aesthetics, sold for $15-25, typically have inconsistent heat treatment, loose tolerances, and failure-prone locks. The blade steel is usually unmarked or labeled with a designation that obscures its actual composition.
Automatic (switchblade) knives in most jurisdictions. Restricted or illegal in many states. The deployment speed advantage over a quality flipper with practice is negligible. The legal exposure is not.
Novelty blade shapes. Wave-shaped blades, serrated-everywhere designs, and unusual geometry marketed for self defense are solutions to problems that do not exist. They are harder to sharpen and less versatile for everyday use.
