The 5 Most Common Glock Malfunctions and How to Fix Them

Glocks are among the most reliable pistols made. That reliability is well-documented and earned. But no mechanical system is infallible, and understanding the malfunctions that do occur — what causes them and how to clear them — is part of competent ownership. Most malfunctions are not the gun’s fault. Most are ammunition, maintenance, or technique-related.

Here are the five you are most likely to encounter, and what to do about each.

1. Failure to Fire (FTF)

What it looks like: You pull the trigger. Click. No bang.

Likely causes:

  • Defective primer. The cartridge primer failed to ignite. This is the most common cause with factory ammunition.
  • Underpowered ammunition. Reloaded or low-quality ammunition may not have sufficient charge. Never trust carry ammo you did not buy from a reputable manufacturer in factory-sealed packaging.
  • Fouled striker channel. If the striker channel is contaminated with excessive oil, carbon, or debris, the striker may not travel forward with enough force to reliably detonate the primer. Glock specifically cautions against oiling the striker channel.

How to clear: Tap-rack-reassess. Tap the magazine firmly to seat it, rack the slide to eject the bad round and chamber a fresh one, then reassess whether the threat is still present.

Preventive maintenance: Keep the striker channel dry. When cleaning, run a dry patch through the striker channel from the rear of the slide. Do not oil it.

2. Failure to Eject (FTE) / Stovepipe

What it looks like: The fired case does not fully leave the ejection port. Often the case stands upright in the port, looking like a stovepipe chimney — hence the name.

Likely causes:

  • Limp-wristing. The most common cause of stovepipes in Glocks is shooter technique. If the shooting hand does not provide a firm, locked-wrist platform, the slide cannot cycle correctly — it is pushing against a moving surface rather than a stable one. New shooters, smaller-framed shooters using a larger pistol, and shooters shooting from unusual positions are most prone to this.
  • Weak ammunition. Underpowered loads do not generate enough energy to cycle the slide fully.
  • Worn or damaged extractor. The extractor holds the case rim as the slide travels rearward. A worn extractor may not grip the case consistently.

How to clear: Swipe the case out of the ejection port, rack the slide fully, chamber a fresh round.

Preventive maintenance: Inspect the extractor for wear or damage at each cleaning. Ensure your grip technique locks the wrist — the gun has to have something to push against.

3. Failure to Feed (FTF)

What it looks like: The slide goes forward but the round does not chamber. The round may be partially in the chamber, nose-down against the feed ramp, or stuck partway.

Likely causes:

  • Dirty or damaged magazine. The magazine feeds the round into the chamber. A dirty follower, damaged feed lips, or a weak magazine spring can cause mis-feeds.
  • Dirty feed ramp. Carbon buildup on the barrel’s feed ramp can cause rounds to catch rather than slide smoothly into the chamber.
  • Bullet profile mismatch. Some hollow-point designs, particularly older designs with wide mouth cavities, do not feed reliably in all pistols. This is ammunition selection issue.

How to clear: Tap-rack-reassess. If the round is fully stuck, you may need to lock the slide back, strip the magazine, and manually clear the chamber.

Preventive maintenance: Clean the feed ramp at every cleaning session. Inspect and rotate magazines. Test your chosen defensive ammunition for reliable feeding — fire at least 50-100 rounds of your carry load before trusting it.

4. Double Feed

What it looks like: Two rounds are trying to enter the chamber simultaneously. The slide will not go fully forward or rearward.

Likely causes:

  • Failure to eject combined with next round stripping from the magazine. The classic double feed: the fired case was not fully ejected, the slide started forward, and the next round from the magazine was driven into the case still in the chamber.
  • Damaged magazine. A magazine that does not feed smoothly can present a round at the wrong angle.

How to clear: This is the most complex malfunction to clear under stress. Lock the slide back. Physically strip the magazine from the gun (this may require forcefully ripping it out if a round is wedged). Rack the slide two or three times to clear the chamber. Reinsert a fresh magazine. Rack and chamber a round.

Preventive maintenance: Keep magazines clean and rotated. If a particular magazine causes repeated double feeds, retire it.

5. Failure to Lock Back on Empty

What it looks like: The slide does not lock open after the last round is fired.

Likely causes:

  • Shooter’s thumb riding the slide stop. If the thumb of the shooting hand rests on the slide stop lever during firing, it can prevent the lever from rising to lock the slide back. This is the most common cause.
  • Weak magazine spring. The follower in the magazine rises to push the slide stop up after the last round. A weak or worn spring may not push the follower high enough.
  • Worn slide stop. The slide stop notch on the slide wears over time, particularly with high round counts.

How to clear: It is not a safety issue — the gun will still fire a chambered round. Simply note that the magazine is empty when the trigger produces a click, drop the magazine, and reload.

Preventive maintenance: Be conscious of grip — keep the support hand thumb below the slide stop. Rotate magazines and replace springs on high-mileage magazines.

A final note: If any malfunction recurs consistently, it is a diagnostic problem. Isolate the variable — try different ammunition, try a different magazine, check the extractor. Systematic diagnosis will identify whether the issue is the gun, the ammunition, or the shooter.
