Glock Gen 1 Through Gen 5: What Actually Changed and Why It Mattered

Glock has produced five major generations of its core pistol line. Each generation carried real improvements, not just marketing refreshes — and understanding what changed, and why, is useful context for any buyer deciding between a used Gen 4 and a new Gen 5, or trying to understand why a particular Glock shoots differently from another.

Gen 1 (1982–1988): The Original Proof of Concept

The Gen 1 Glock 17 was radical when it arrived. A polymer frame in 1982 was not just unusual — it was viewed with suspicion. Early reports that the Glock was undetectable to airport metal detectors (false — the barrel, slide, and springs are all steel) created political theater that had nothing to do with the gun’s actual performance.

Gen 1 features: smooth, uninterrupted grip panels with no stippling or finger grooves. The texture was minimal by today’s standards. The trigger guard was rounded. There was no accessory rail. The gun held 17 rounds of 9mm in a pistol lighter than most comparably-sized steel frames.

Gen 1 Glocks are collector items now. They are rare, particularly in good condition. You will not find them at a typical gun store.

Gen 2 (1988–1998): Grip Texture and the Thumbrest

Gen 2 introduced checkering on the front and backstrap, replacing the smooth panels. The texturing improved purchase in wet or sweaty conditions — a real-world improvement for duty carry. A thumbrest was added to the frame on early Gen 2s, then removed.

The trigger guard gained a scalloped front for support-hand finger placement — a grip technique popular at the time but now largely out of fashion. Gen 2 Glocks are still in regular service at departments that have never updated their issue pistols. They work.

Gen 3 (1998–2013): The Rail and the Finger Grooves

Gen 3 is the generation most people think of when they think of a Glock. It introduced:

Accessory rail. The Picatinny-compatible rail under the dust cover made lights and lasers simple. Before this, weapon-mounted lights required adapters. After Gen 3, a light-bearing holster became a standard part of the duty carry setup.

Finger grooves. Glock added three finger grooves to the front of the grip. This was immediately polarizing. Shooters whose hand geometry matched the grooves found them helpful. Shooters whose hands were too large or too small found them frustrating — the grooves force a specific grip that does not fit everyone. The Gen 3 finger grooves remained through Gen 4 and became Glock’s most-criticized design choice.

Gen 3 Glocks are widely available used and represent excellent value. The finger groove issue is real but manageable for most shooters.

Gen 4 (2010–2018): Backstraps and the RTF2 Grip

Gen 4 addressed the one-size-fits-all grip problem with an interchangeable backstrap system. Three backstraps — small, medium, and large — allowed adjustment for hand size. Removing the medium backstrap gives a short-reach grip comparable to Gen 3; installing the large adds substantial reach.

The grip texture changed to Glock’s RTF2 (Rough Textured Frame) pattern — more aggressive than Gen 3, providing better purchase without stippling. Most shooters find it a clear improvement.

The finger grooves remained, which continued to frustrate shooters whose hand geometry did not match.

Gen 4 also brought a dual recoil spring assembly, replacing the single spring of earlier generations. This reduced felt recoil and extended service life. Early Gen 4 pistols (particularly the G17 and G19) had extractor issues in the first production runs — since resolved, but worth knowing if buying early Gen 4 used.

Gen 5 (2017–Present): No More Finger Grooves

Gen 5 is the current production generation and the one to buy new. Key changes:

No finger grooves. Glock finally removed the grooves. The front strap is smooth, which accommodates a wider range of hand sizes and grip styles. This was the change most shooters had wanted since Gen 3.

Marksman Barrel. Gen 5 introduced a match-grade barrel with improved rifling geometry. Accuracy improvements are measurable at range distances.

Ambidextrous slide stop. Both sides of the frame have a slide stop lever — a genuine improvement for left-handed shooters and for techniques that use the support hand thumb on the slide stop.

Flared magazine well. A slight flare at the magazine well speeds reloads. Subtle, but useful under stress.

Front slide serrations. Gen 5 added serrations to the front of the slide, allowing forward press checks or press-check grips.

nDLC finish. The new finish is more durable and corrosion-resistant than the Tenifer finish used on earlier generations.

Which Generation to Buy

For new purchases: Gen 5. The improvements over Gen 4 are real, the price premium is minimal, and the no-grooves grip fits more people.

For used purchases: Gen 4 is excellent value and the backstrap system is genuinely useful. Avoid early Gen 4 (first-year production) if buying used. Gen 3 is also fine — the accessory rail and wide parts availability make it a solid choice at lower price points.

Gen 6 (2026): A New Generation Arrives

Glock officially launched the Gen 6 lineup at SHOT Show in January 2026. Key changes across the Gen 6 platform:

  • Universal optics mounting system. The Gen 6 eliminates adapter plates — virtually all major pistol red dot sights mount directly without additional hardware. The optic sits lower on the slide than the Gen 5 MOS system, improving co-witnessing with iron sights. Some Gen 6 models include a native ACRO footprint.
  • Enhanced trigger. Pull weight dropped to 4.5–5 lbs (from 5.5–6 lbs in Gen 5), with a crisper break, shorter reset, and reduced travel. The factory Gen 6 trigger is a meaningful improvement over earlier generations.
  • Improved Marksman Barrel. Enhanced polygonal rifling, tighter tolerances, and a recessed crown build on the Gen 5 GMB for improved consistency.
  • Ergonomics. Palm swell, wider beavertail, RTF6 grip texture, and optimized compact grip length. Ambidextrous controls are now standard across the lineup.
  • Gen 5 MOS discontinuation. Glock is phasing out several Gen 5 MOS models. Gen 5 non-MOS models remain in production, but the optics-ready future is Gen 6.

The practical impact: if you are buying new and want an optics-ready Glock, Gen 6 is the version to buy. The universal mounting system alone removes a real friction point of the Gen 5 MOS plate system.

Updated Buying Recommendation (2026)

New purchase: Gen 6 if optics-ready is important to you. Gen 5 at a discount if you plan to run iron sights or already have a plate-compatible optic setup — Gen 5 MOS pistols will drop in price as Gen 6 replaces them.

Used purchase: Gen 4 remains excellent value. Gen 3 is sound at lower price points. Early Gen 4 production (first-year G17 and G19) had extractor issues — otherwise Gen 4 is reliable.
